What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a treatment method used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. It is only one of many tools used by Chinese medicine to aid in the health and well being of people. As in Western medicine, for any one disease several treatments may be used on the same patient. Acupuncture is not and was never a magical tool to aid in the health of patients and treat disease. It is founded in established, objective principles of Chinese medicine, which have been described and used for about 3000 years.

Is Acupuncture painful?

The usual treatment of acupuncture entails placing needles in prescribed points along what has been called channels or meridians. There is very little discomfort at the time of placement of needles, which are sterile and never used more than once. Many patients find treatments relaxing and reinvigorating.

Will one treatment “fix” my condition?

For most medical problems a series of treatments is necessary. For many chronic problems, long standing treatment is recommended. Treatments last about 20 to 30 minutes and are prescribed one to three times a week, depending on the patient’s condition. Acupuncture is generally not meant to replace Western treatments but help in recovery or control of medical problems. In many instances patients can reduce the number and type of medications.

How does Acupuncture work?

Many theories have been proposed; changes in endorphins have been used by some, while others propose changes in electrical charges in the body and nerves, but no one is proven. A great deal of research has been done and is presently being carried out in order to build a better framework that may explain the actions of acupuncture on a patient.
